SESSION 3

WHAT DOES LOVE REQUIRE?

SCENARIO:

YOU ARE A WAITER / WAITRESS IN A RESTAURANT
You’re there to serve your guests’ every need. But you’re clumsy too. And while handing out drinks to the table, a guest accidentally bumps you and you spill a glass of coke all over their friend.

What do you do?

JESUS’ INFLUENCE: WHAT DO WE DO?

A major part of everyday life for a follower of Jesus is to work out how your faith affects your response to everyday situations.

We have lots of specific situations in the Bible where we see Jesus’ response, but we don’t see Jesus’ response to every single tiny situation we encounter on a day-to-day basis.

After Jesus’ washes His disciples feet in John 13 he says:

I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you! (John 13)

But how do we know what to do if he hasn’t given us a specific example that matches what we as young people face on a regular day-to-day basis?

There’s millions of responses we can make to any situation. But what’s the right response?

As an apprentice of Jesus who wants to serve others well… what would Jesus want us to do?

When we dig a little bit deeper into the Gospels and we look at what Jesus came to start and finish, we see Jesus gives us a very clear commandment.

SERMON SNIPPET:

Ps Jack | What Does Love Require?

John 13:33-35 NLT

Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going.

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

The main teaching of Ps Jack’s sermon helps us know that what we do must imitate how Jesus loved others.

  1. The most important five words of the new commandment are “As I have loved you”. How do we see Jesus loving others in the Gospels?

  2. Every follower of Christ only needs to ask one question: “What does love require of me?”. Or in other words “What does His love FOR ME require OF ME for _____________? Think of an example where you have responded poorly to someone & how you would respond differently if you fully embraced this question?

Reflection QUESTION:

What Does Love Require of You at INY?

We believe the Holy Spirit helps us to act, live & become more and more like Jesus in every situation in our lives. We believe this question is a Spirit-inspired question to help us live as a follower of Jesus.
